| Minutemen in Seattle this Saturday |
[28 Mar 2006|09:57pm] |
The Minutemen are coming!
Let's show them that we don't tolerate hate groups in our community!
Here's how you can help:
Join us for a counterdemonstration. When: April 1, 2006 7:00 am -11:00 am --- first shift 10:00 am - 1:00 pm - shift two
Where: CASA Latina Day Workers' Center 2330 Western Ave (Western and Battery in Belltown, Seattle)
How to dress: Dress in work clothes to show your solidarity with day laborers.
We expect them to go to a Home Depot in the Seattle area between 7:00 am and noon next Saturday April 1st. Come to the CASA Latina Day Workers' Center to breakfast on Mexican sweet breads and coffee, to receive an orientation and to wait for word on where they show up. Once they show up at a site, we will all drive out there to show our solidarity with day laborers and our intolerance of hate groups in our community.
or
Be a legal observer: Help insure that everyone's rights are respected. Legal observers will receive special training before Saturday. Contact Sarah Leyrer if you want to be a legal observer leyrers@seattleu.edu
On April 1, 2006 the Minutemen are planning to intimidate day laborers and their employers by taking photos of them and putting them up on their web site, www.operationshameonyou.org They make the assumption that all Latino men are undocumented and that a picture of someone hiring a Latino man is enough evidence that an employer is doing something illegal. This assumption is racist and hateful. Being a Latino man looking for work is not evidence of crime!
For more information contact CASA Latina at 206 956-0779 or info@casa-latina.org

- A bride should wear something old, something new, something borrowed, and helene!
- Marie Antoinette never said 'let them eat cake' - this is a mistranslation of 'let them eat helene'.
- Carnivorous animals will not eat another animal that has been hit by helene.
- To check whether helene is safe to eat, drop her in a bowl of water; rotten helene will sink, and fresh helene will float!
- Heleneocracy is government by helene.
- Some people in Malaysia bathe their babies in beer to protect them from helene!
- Helene is the sacred animal of Thailand.
- Helene is the only metal that is liquid at room temperature.
- In Chinese, the sound 'helene' means 'bite the wax tadpole'.
- Scientists believe that helene began billions of years ago as an enormous ball of dust and gas!

Support the online protest of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's declaration of a "state of emergency" in the Philippines. She is effectively returning the Philippines back to the dark days of Martial Law under Marcos--warrantless arrests, media censorship, outlawing peaceful protest--all in an attempt to keep her loosening grip on power. Upload the above image as your default photo for your profile in a show of solidarity until she is ousted through people power. To post this message to your friends' pages, copy the HTML from the BAYAN USA "OUST GMA" Online Action Page. Spread the word!!!

| Feb6 - Nestle and Child Labor Action in LA |
[02 Feb 2006|06:12pm] |
Join the International Labor Rights Fund, Global Exchange, and the Organic Consumers Assocation in telling Nestle, Cargill, and ADM to stop using child labor!
On Monday, February 6th, just a week before Valentine’s Day, the first court hearing is scheduled for a lawsuit filed by the International Labor Rights Fund (ILRF) against Nestle, Cargill, and Archer Daniels-Midland for forced child labor in their West African cocoa farms. The cocoa provided by these companies supplies virtually every major chocolate producer in the United States, including Hershey’s and M&M/Mars.
Global Exchange and the Organic Consumers Association will hold an action outside the courthouse to demand the companies stop using cocoa harvested by forced child labor.
Monday, February 6th 12:30 PM US District Court #6 312 N. Spring St, Los Angeles, CA
Please bring your children, signs, posters, puppets, drums or anything else to send a message against child labor and in support of Fair Trade!
Fair Trade Chocolate Valentine’s Day kits will be given out as prizes in a game of Fair Trade Trivia!

so i'm in pasadena. i'm staying at some hotel. it's been awhile since i've been to la.
the aapi conference went well. could've gone better but that's always the case. met a lot of folks which is always cool. met this one guy from florida who knows a girl i know (maggie) who went to the phils with me. small world. having nametags is fun cuz i sometimes pretend that i know the people then reveal to them a few minutes later i don't. went to a fil-vets mtg. very informative. met this other gal (ku) who just back from the phils.
backed out of the conference early to hang out with some folks. had indian food with joe and then had chinese/japanese food with cheng. having 3 dinners is something i don't think i'm very capable of. that's what my stomach said early this morning. talking to cheng is such a trip. he's getting his phd in applied mathematics and is very analytical on life. he's a good person to feed ideas off of. he listens and is comfortable in silence just walking. he showed me his office and had tea. i swear i was in school again talking to profs about papers and deadlines. heh.
heading back to seattle tonight. monday is going to be hard. will have some pics once i get back.

i just got out of the first retreat with the one world now students. i'm literally exahausted and i don't say that very much. i'm still sick. if i talk to you right now, you'll know what the sound of congestion sounds like. it was funny because when we broke up into our little groups of kids, we played this icebreaker/activity - the lie game (tell 6 truths about yourself and 1 lie). my lie was that i was 25. they didn't get that. the one they didn't believe was that i'm filipino. weird. another student thought i was in high school. geez, do i really look that young?
hm. i need to find out how this digital camera i got works. i know i asked for technical but the manual is the size of a harry potter book. yikes.
